Did you know there are nearly 4,000 colleges in the US? That’s a lot of colleges to choose from! Get ahead now by adding colleges to your “Colleges I’m Thinking About” list in Naviance. Your college list should include a range of options:
- UDC
- Community colleges (e.g., MC, PGCC, NOVA)
- Public/private commutable four-year universities (e.g., American, Catholic, GW, UMD, Trinity, Georgetown, Howard)
- Public/private HBCUs (e.g., Bowie, Morgan, Del State, NC Central)
- Public/private PWIs
Before senior year, you should also:
- Visit at least one college campus (many colleges in DC, MD, and VA are accessible via metro)
- Research colleges’ graduation rates, financial aid packages, majors, fly-in programs, and summer academic opportunities
- Discuss the list with your school counselor or college and career coordinator to narrow it down to the colleges you will apply to
- Research and plan for application deadlines. Understand the difference between Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision

- Start your college essay
When you are a senior, move the colleges you decided on to your “Colleges I’m Applying to” list in Naviance.
